Today we finally got a proper lie-in; we didn't have to wake up until 8.30 (unless you were Nicky & Kate, who were awake early & decided to bake cakes at 8am - as you do). We planned to have a nice, relaxing day as it was our last one in Switzerland.
We were all feeling a little tired and lazy so we got the bus down to the swimming pool. The pool was outside & the weather was beautiful so we were all pretty happy! There were also diving boards, rubber rings and slides to play on so we had plenty to do. We decided that we were going to practice diving from the 5m board whilst shouting funny phrases like 'Directions to Moira Jane's', '40 sausages in a bag', 'Bob', 'Cheesey Puffs' and doing impressions of a tree (which looked more like jellyfish). The couple sitting near the leaders beside the pool seemed pretty amused by the whole thing, and then the gentleman decided to do a very impressive backflip off the 5m board.
After 2 hours of persuasion Lucia finally jumped from the 5m board, which we're all really proud of! While this was happening Kate, Rachael and Nairne managed to catch up on some reading, so now they're really happy too.
After swimming we rushed back to the campsite to do some team
building activities. We began by pretending we were on a pirate ship. We were all blindfolded, apart from Nairne who had to lead us up the stairs and over a picnic bench. She managed to navigate us from the chalet to the football pitch, where sadly our pirate ship sank. As we were sinking we had to try to fit all of us on an ice berg which was melting. We had to stand on a tarp and repeatedly fold it, each time trying to fit all of us on it. We then had to stand 3 people on a set of skis and use them to get away from some 'polar bears'. This was hard as we had to time our movements very carefully or else the skis didn't move.
After this we were blindfolded (again!) except for both Hannahs and we had to try to unknot a large piece of rope and use this to create a perimeter for our camp. Hannah C wasn't allowed to move and Hannah W only had one hand (she lost the other one to frostbite). Once we'd untangle it we were unblindfolded and had to build a shelter using rope, tarpaulin, canvas and sticks. We realised quickly that we need to work on our knots but after around 25 minutes we finally managed to create a shelter for ourselves.
We then headed back to the Chalet and spent the next hour or so packing as we leave tomorrow for Paris. It's amazing how much stuff we've all bought and that we can fit all our new things in our bags as well as the things we brought. Well, the leaders can!
Once we had all packed, it was time to get changed for our meal at The Hotel Post, which we were all very excited for! We all had a lot of food as the portions were huge! But it was super yummy and we all managed to clear our plates. We also got to have dessert which meant more ice cream for us - yay!! Rachael ordered a children's ice cream and was pretty excited when it arrived in a train shaped pot and contained a whistle. Once we'd polished off our ice cream (and established that the 'dessert space' is a legitimate thing) we headed back to the Chalet ready to enjoy our last night of free time in Switzerland. The leaders were very well behaved this evening and made sure they were home well before we were!
Nicky dropped in on a Celidh the scout from Airdrie were having & Nairne and Hannah C swapped contact details with a new friend they had made.
Once we were all in bed, Nicky, Kate & Rachael did some star gazing & saw some bats eating the flies around the light on the veranda. You can see lots of stars in the mountains, loads more than in Glasgow but there is less pollution so it's easier for them to be seen.
We leave tomorrow for Disneyland & whilst we're excited to go somewhere new, we're sad to leave Kandersteg.
