After a short (111 mile) drive from Savannah, we made it to our second stop and the first stay at a private campground. We had our second experience of having to set up in the rain, and by the word "we", I really mean Darryl. The campground, Lake Aire, was decent for the $28 nightly fee. The original lot they assigned us was not graveled and was holding water so upon request, they offered us another spot.
Since we only planned to stay a few days and had so many options of new places to see, we tried to isolate just a few points of interest each day, so our schedule was not too hectic and exhausting. The start of our second day included driving to the only tea plantation in North America. Being an avid tea drinker, I was excited to learn and see how tea was farmed and produced. While we did watch a video tour and saw the actual production line, I would recommend this free tour yet would suggest a visit in the spring or summer, since the scenery was quite brown, and they were not actually producing tea during the time we were there.
The second day was intended for an entire day in downtown Charleston, however, we awoke to a sewage backup in our toilet. While I convinced myself this wasn’t the worst thing that could happen, Darryl and I went to the best resource for learning shit on the fly. No pun intended. YouTube. After a few attempts, Darryl was able to free the clog and eliminate future threats. Feeling quite smug of our accomplishment, we headed to downtown Charleston and walked through the French Quarter district. We visited the oldest theatre in Charleston, Dock Street Theatre and were welcomed by their friendly staff and then made our way to the Marketplace where there were vendors selling everything from straw hats to Michel Kor purses. On our way out, we checked out the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. It had a beautiful architecture with hand-crafted stain glass windows. This place reminded me of my wonderful friends, Matt Stewart and David Groeller.
