RV Vegabonds: Our Year-long Adventure

We arrived at Skidaway Island two hours earlier than check in which I didn't think would be a problem. I mean, when you arrive at a hotel early, if they have an available room, most will make the accommodation. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case here. The attendant indicated there was someone on our site until the checkout time yet we could leave our RV in the parking area and go off-site for some lunch or shopping. We followed her advice and found the local Walmart to stock up on a few items. When we arrived back at the check-in time, we were displeased to discover they would not honor the disabled veteran card I provided to receive a reduced rate. Even after I provided details of a twenty-minute conversation I had with their staff about this issue prior to my arrival, they reiterated their policy and refused to issue the discount. Not letting this interfere with our plans, we set up the RV in the pouring rain which lasted for several hours. Once settled, we nestled in to prepare for dinner and the Super Bowl game. Neither disappointed. Go EAGLES!

Our second day in Savannah was amazing. While the trees were barren and the grass mostly dead, walking through the city during this off season was quite spectacular. The weather was in the mid-sixties with a nice cool breeze. We walked River Street which entailed making a stop at a storefront simply called, The Peanut Shop of Savannah. If you get a chance, you must go in and try the 50+ kinds of flavored peanuts. The flavors range from siracha, butter toffee, vinegar and salt to delicacies like milk and dark chocolate. You can sample as many as you chose. After exploring the Riverwalk and downtown area, we headed back to the car to find this nearby #1 Trip Advisor rated café called Joe’s Homemade Café. With over 600 excellent reviews, we knew we had to become “foodies for a day” and check it out. With only a seating for 10-12 (inside and out), the café was clearly more of a take-out and catering establishment (which was mentioned in the reviews). We ordered “The Bluff” and “The Abercorn.” All we can say is Best. Panini. Ever. And oh, the lemon curd cake was just as amazing. What separates this café from others is the sheer level of exceptional customer service, attentiveness by all the staff to include the Chef who came out to greet us and exchange life stories. You can read all their staff's unique personal stories and professional bios on their website.

Once back at our RV site, we decided it was a good time to walk off lunch and found a 2-mile trail that our slightly overweight chihuahua, Reese, could accompany us on. The trail was clean, marked well and led to a beautiful observatory that overlooked the Island. After finishing our walk, we tried out the park comfort stations and relished in the high pressured, extremely hot showers. Anyone who has ever taken a shower in an RV, can appreciate how much it means to have this simple yet oh so satisfying experience.

Our third day of Savannah included visiting Old Fort Jackson. The Fort was well maintained and had only a few visitors. It was interesting reading about how this Fort was used during the Civil War and the artifacts were well preserved for our viewing. The most exciting part of the tour was watching an actual firing of a cannon. As a bonus, we saw large transport Freightliner ships come through the port as well as dolphins playing nearby. On our way back to the park, we saw a sign near the water named, “Moon River.” While I can’t attach the picture, let’s just say we left with a symbolic gesture and photograph to remember the river. On this final night of our stay, we grilled out, built a fire and had dirty martinis to celebrate the end of our first stop.

Things we would do the Same:
1) Come during the off season. The park only had a few campers on site and the weather remained in the 60’s.
2) Follow Trip Advisors restaurant reviews.

Things we would do Differently:
1) If you arrive at your campsite early and are told it is occupied, ask if they have other comparable sites that are ready and vacant. We discovered there were other sites available yet since we did not ask, they did not offer. (In their defense, they could have assumed we wanted the particular site we registered for online.)
2) Check and recheck your reservations prior to arriving at the campground. After the second day, I realized I booked for three on my planner, yet only booked for two days with the park. Fortunately, they had numerous open sites since it was off season.
3) Remember to not leave food items outside of the Motorhome. We awoke to hear a large raccoon pulling a box of discarded trash into the woods (along with Darryl's sneakers which were on top of the box)
4) Keep an extra RV key in a hidden place outside of the RV. One evening while outside I inadvertently closed the RV door without checking and ended up locked out for a little bit. Thank goodness Darryl used his stretch arms and entered the shoe compartment and was able to reach the interior handle.
