Mijn dagboek

After long last, another chapter! It will be harder to find things to write some day, but today is not that day just yet! Today's topic is lunch. Breaks and lunchtime differs from back home i have noticed. Back in the Netherlands it is the standard to have tea at 10, eat a quick sandwitch around noon for half an hour, and then have another teabreak around 3 in the afternoon. Now as a student i already only really ate a sandwitch during lunch, and tea was drank at my workspace at the time. In Finland, the workplace breaks seem to be the same. People come in work and get a cup of coffee to drink at their workspace, and work untill lunchtime. But the moment of when lunch is eaten depends greatly per person. As far as i have gathered, lunchtime is loosely between 11:30 and 13:00. I suspect the fins taking a light breakfast, judging by how hungry they seem to be around lunchtime.

The lunch themselves are a warm meal either brought from home or bought in a cafeteria. The dutch also have cafeterias, but most i've seen have a few fried snacks and soups and mostly sandwitches to choose from. The ones in Finland offer not only soups and salads, but also things like shepards pie or chicken curry, and even desserts like icecream to eat afterwards! And we also appear to have a free of charge coffee and tea bar, so you can take a warm drink with you back to work after you've finished eating. The eating of a hot meal during lunch is not that odd a habit, but seeing as i am used to eating lightly throughout the day and only eating a big meal in the evening it was a adjustment nontheless, that i admit, still am not fully used to.

I bring lunches to work, but sometimes catch myself eating a warm meal in the evening too, out of habit. In the first two weeks that i had to re-adjust my eating pattern i was pretty hungry, but i think i am slowly getting used to it! Of course i just notice these things in my current internship workplace, and can't say if it is this way for other workplaces in Finland. Another thing i noticed during lunch is that here in the Aalto Design factory, is that is seems a big social event. People invite others along to come along to eat, people are slightly more chatty then usual and there are a lot of lunches and breakfasts organised by both the students and the staff.

And lastly, on a completely unrelated note, i have finally had my first starbucks! I now understand why people are so addicted to it. It is expensive, but dang it was tasty! Funny thing was, wheras the people at my internship have misspelled my name here and there, starbucks got it right. Go figure the place that is SUPPOSED to get it wrong, did it right haha.

(PS, there is a smoothie bar here called jungle juice and it makes a MEAN ''killer bee'' smoothie!)
