This morning we woke early, made lunch, and got everything packed to head down south- waterfalls galore, a black sand beach complete with lighthouse, and the ice cave tour! But the weather had other ideas. We opened the outer door and it was so blizzardy! It had snowed a few inches and the drifts in some areas were up to my knees! We hopped in the car and got about 20 min. away until we hit a closed road- the Search & Rescue had a van there and they said it wouldn't be open for another 2 hours at least. We stopped at a nearby gas station and I ran in to see if anyone could give me more information. They shared the road website to check, which was
helpful. We came back home and let the girls finish a movie while we called and planned. Our absolute latest leave time was 10:15 to make it to the ice cave tour, so we left again then and got stopped at the same road (the website was correct- still closed). It was snowing like it meant it, and the wind had really picked up. No roads down to Vik (pronounced Veek) were open. So we called and canceled our tour. We decided the next best thing was Perlan- a place that has a manmade ice cave (but taken from a nearby glacier and taken 2 years to build), a northern lights show, a museum, tectonic plates movie, and a volcano show. It was really nice to be flexible and still able to do something with our day! And still get to go inside an ice cave. :)
This afternoon I scrubbed scrubbed scrubbed all the girls hair (something from the Blue Lagoon had made it really matted and un-brushable). Then we had a little nap before dinner. Peter really wanted to try some specific cuisine and had found a restaurant he really wanted to try - and we were able to get a reservation tonight. We ate at "The Three Coats" not far from our apartment. Peter had whale and horse. I had lamb steak and baked potato (their potatoes here are so sweet and moist!). Clara wanted the fish 'n chips &
shrimp. And the other three had delicious vegetable soup with cheesy bread. Everyone was pretty amazing at sharing food and trying new things! The most incredible thing to me was that I could eat anything on the table!!! Especially the breaded cod tasted amazing because I haven't had it in years, but everything was quite delicious! Such a great spot!
Theme for today: You Don't Have to Put Others Down to Build Yourself Up & Flexibility!
It was a bummer to not get to see these areas today. Next time we come, here's a start to our bucket list:
-Hvolsvöllur
-Seljalandsfoss
-Skógafoss Waterfall
-Dyrhólaey Lighthouse
-Reynisfjara Beach
Things we learned:
Leesie: I learned about glaciers.
Addy: I learned that it's ok not to get to do everything you want to do.
It's good to be flexible and not frustrated, because that doesn't help anyone.
Kathy: I was reminded that it's good to be flexible, because that allows you to still have a fun time, even if it's something different than you planned.
Peter: I learned God can turn misfortunes into goodness. Our day started out with misfortunes, but it ended really good.
Miracles:
-Safety!!! We are so grateful for the safety we had traveling today in all the snow! It was blizzardy all day and people were sliding and stuck all over the place! We were really grateful for Peter's great snow-driving skills! And studded tires! And angels helping us!
-We were still able to have a productive good day today even though all of our plans fell through. We were able to get into the museum, have time for baths and a nap, and enjoy a nice dinner together.
