Summer Trip 2015

It's Pioneer Days! We had no idea it was a state holiday weekend! Everything is closed. But not Dick's. Dick's Sporting Goods that is! It is the biggest Dick's we've ever seen! We also found a trailer supply store that made Camping World look like a mini-mart. I guess they do everything big here!

The following day we ventured back into town to see if anything was going on. There had been fireworks the night before and a big parade in honor of the holiday. We found a Farmer's market. Again, HUGE! Later that day we took a guided tour of the Great Salt Lake and the Kennecut (Bingham)Copper mine. The lake looked like the ocean. We had to go over 9000 feet up a winding road...much of it dirt...to look down on this amazing mine. It is almost 1 mile deep and 3 miles wide. It is actually visible to the astronauts in the space shuttle! It is the richest copper mine in history and has delivered over 20 million tons of copper. That is enough to rewire every home, apartment and car in North America. It was amazing. The tires on the trucks were 15' tall and made the school bus that runs the miners around look like a tiny speck.

The wildflowers were in bloom up there. It was an awesome sight.
