Maybe one of Raphel's most famous pieces, the fresco of The School of Athans captures academia at its finest. Located in the Vatican, he painted this masterpiece in the early 1500s. At the center of the painting are the foundational thinks of the time, Plato and his student Aristotle. Plato, it pointing up as he ponders the nature of the world and the purpose and properties of it. Aristotle is holding his hand towards the earth, as he explores the topic of ethics and what is right and wrong. These are the greatest thinkers of the time, forming the basis for modern philosophy, mathematics, and science.
