Under Pope Julius II, St. Peter's Basilica began construction in 1506. After 109 years of work, the basilica was finished in 1615 when Pope Paul V was in power. Many people worked on the layout of this place of worship. It began as a Greek cross layout which resembles more of an X shape but eventually turned into the shape we see today, a Latin cross. Besides the immaculate design of the inside, the church holds some amazing pieces of art such as Michelangelo’s Pietà. It is a stunning life-like statue of a strong and young Mary holding up her son after he was taken off the cross. Down under, it holds the bones of Peter himself.
