India, Europe and Africa 2016

At the very mention of Salzburg, I had Idyllic notions of picturesque meadows and a backdrop of mountains. Doing some research on the bus on the way I was disappointed to learn that the only part of the Sound of Music that wasn't filmed in Salzburg was the opening scene.

We wandered into town on the first evening and sat next to the river to soak up some of the atmosphere and check out the Markatsteg, covered in padlocks. The next two days we spent the mornings walking in the nearby hills where we found plenty of good views of the mountains, and listened to woodpeckers high in the trees, but struggled to get a good view of them. On the first morning on our way towards the river we came across an outrageously tantalising market with a huge variety of meats, cheeses, pastries, breads, fruit and wine. It was blissful but I did get a bit caught up in the moment and ate a ‘karmel’ bite. Expecting it to be a sweet caramel treat, I wasn’t overly thrilled when I realised it was in fact dried spicy pork fat. Liam thinks I had it coming by picking after breakfast. In the afternoon we wondered the streets of the old part of the city and listened to a cellist while endulging in local pastries. We spent the evenings in the hostel pub trying to work out how we were going to get to Slovenia.
