In the whirlwind week of Nick and Geoff, we managed to get tickets to see a very special Noh performance. It was a special anniversary, and the three Noh schools of Kanze, Kongo, and Komparu got together to have all three current heads of the schools dance Okina on the same stage at the same time. Okina as a play in itself is rarely performed, but to see 3 versions simultaneously on one stage was amazing. We didn't find out about the show until 4 days prior, so we got the emergency filler side seats on the folding chairs, but they were facing the side of the stage and still offered a really good view.
It was actually really amusing seeing how close the Kanze and Kongo styles were, and how completely different at times Komparu was. He'd turn right when the other two turned left. I wish I took better notes right after the performance, but it's now a month later and I'm trying to recall fleeting moments. I do remember that none of them wore a mask.
The agility of the Sambaso dance was a stark and welcome contrast to the opening Okina. This time, the black mask was used. I remember being captivated by it.
The last portion of the performance was very interesting, as it had, at one point, 3 characters on the hashigakari, and 3(?) characters on stage left, and they had a fight sequence where one from each side would meet in the middle of the main stage to do a pair battle. This was unlike any Noh I had ever seen before, and I swore under my breath when one of the performers jumped clear across the corner divide from the main stage to the hashigakari. Following that, there was TOUCHING wrestle-combat. This last portion was so lively and foreign and new that it completely changed my mind on what Noh was. If Noh looked like this when I studied it, I would not have ever described it to others as "the slow and boring one" of the traditional Japanese theatrical arts.
Then again, as Geoff said, if this was how one was introduced to Noh, then what would follow would only be disappointment as the rest of the repertoire looks nothing like this.
