My diary

I did not expect to feel this way, but I actually felt more homesick and restless during this time than any other time during the semester. I always spend thanksgiving with my large extended family, and I facetimed them while they were together. As a sentimental person, I am the number one fan of traditions. Because I have never been here in Paris for the holidays, I have no traditions to cherish, or even to create. This is a unique experience for me as I have never been in this position. I felt like I was living through my family as they celebrated. I also called my boyfriend and his family and watched his dad cut the turkey. It was strange to experience this from so far away, but to still feel the warmth of family. The six of us here celebrated thanksgiving together on Saturday evening. We all went to the market together to scavenge for food that looked appropriate for thanksgiving. The chaos of being scattered around the market, yelling, “do you think we need this?” certainly felt like family. I loved the humor in using google translate to try to find something resembling corn starch to make gravy. The cold and moody weather added to the Thanksgiving vibe. We popped a couple chickens in the oven along with an apple pie, and began making the side dishes. We made stir fry veggies, mashed potatoes, gravy, with baguette, apple pie, and chocolate pie. In our little apartment, we set up a table for six with festive bright napkins. As we cooked, we danced in the kitchen to Christmas music. It was heartwarming to eat together while sharing things we are thankful for. I loved the experience of cooking and celebrating with my friends in another country. I will never forget how it felt.
