Camino de Santiago

As I left the hostel this morning it was like stepping into a scene from gorillas in the mist! It was so cold and foggy, it had rained during the night but now there was just a light mist falling across the mountains. Huge change in weather compared to the last few weeks, I later found out though that the reason being for the change in weather is because the mountains of Galicia are the first object in 5,000km that the westerly winds coming across the Atlantic hit, hence why you can expect an immediate change in weather with frequent rain showers and thunderstorms.

As I made my way down the mountain in the fog and rain,it took me right back to the first day walking across the Pyrenees with the Irish girls that I'd met the day before. None of us really knowing what we had let ourselves in for or what lay ahead of us but we were all pretty upbeat about the whole thing. I don't know why but suddenly the tears began to roll down my cheeks as I thought about how far we had all come from that first day, I had an element of joy and pure respect for all of us accomplishing what we have up till this point.

I knew the sun was coming up at this point but it seemed to take forever this morning because of all
the fog, by 7:30 it still looked dark and grey and the wind was howling around me! My first stop was going to be Fonfría, I had planned to stop in the town before but everywhere was closed due to it being Sunday and I was very early. As I arrived into Fonfría I was never so happy to see people sat outside the café eating and drinking hot drinks. I ordered a coffee and a tortilla and sat and ate inside in the heat.

I took my time at Breakfast as I was in no rush and I wasn't really ready to go back outside in the cold.
I pulled out the wet gear and put it on as I didn't want to have to stop and take it all out half way down the road if the heavens decided to open.
It was a funny morning all I could thinking of was being at home sat on the couch watching movies for the day, that's the kind of morning i was having. It's funny though having said that, I didn't miss my comforts but it was just the kind of thing I would normally do if the weather was crap.

I didn't stop again until Triacastela which should have been my stop for the day but I'd only walked 20.7km, Iv been used to doing 30km or more and it was only 10:20am so I decided I'd stop change my socks and head off again to see how far I could go. I knew I had at lest another 15km in me and the weather had cleared up but was still cool but that was going to work in my favour. From when I left Triacastela I met saw know one not even a car passing for at least 2hours it was mental but so lovely at the same time, it was literally just me the birds and the trees I felt so at peace as hippy trippy as that sounds!

As relaxed as I was, the fact I had no cash left on me was really playing on my mind. I knew I'd get a an ATM once I got to a big town but that was the problem, none of them were big towns lol that's why I'm my hart I knew I was walking to Sarria today(and if I'm being honest I'd already thought about finishing there today if I had the energy to get there!) I did feel like stopping in the two towns before Sarria but neither of them had ATM machines or excepted cards!!

Before I knew it I could see the city I was so excited so started to walk faster but alas the walk into the city was a long one!! What I though would only take a few minutes took about an hour and all I wanted to do was sit and eat some food with my boots off in fact with everything off! Finally though I had arrived and found the information office, bless the poor women working there I'd say she was only hours off giving birth and in my head was thinking 'please god don't let her go into labour now as I don't have the energy to be dealing with that.'

She pointed me in the direction of the bank and the Hostel. It was like Christmas had come all at once they were right beside each other?? I took money out and headed straight into the hostel.
For a minute I did enquire about a private room as I just wanted to chill out alone but it was €45 and I thought, nah that ain't happening( I'm not a tight arse but Iv paid a lot less for lovely rooms with an ensuite, it was clear to me now that the closer we got to Santiago the more expensive the private accommodation was going to be)

I opted for just a bed €10 and they had hot water so i was happy out?? but the gods must have been looking down on me because I have the whole dorm to myself, 16 beds in the one room and it's just me staying there. Everyone else seems to be downstairs. After I'd showered and changed I decided I wouldn't nap I'd just go straight out and have a look around the city and try grab some lunch. I decided that I was not going to order off the pilgrim menu today, I ordered a chicken burger and a glass of wine went all out I tell ya....€5 hello like! Then I had a nice little surprise from my good friend Lil'Linda and baby Olivia, well the laugh we had considering I only had 20% battery left on my phone we sure made the most of it lol

I headed back to the hostel as I had a load of washing to do and needed to have them washed and dried before the sun went down. I charged up the phone and before I knew it it was time for dinner?? I walked around the city and found a lovely little place tucked away yet catching the last few rays of the sun. The dinner consisted of bread(they are mad for their bread) a tuna salad to start, steak and chips for mains, ice cream for deserts and a bottle of red wine €10!!! I'm seriously considering moving here you can't spend your money!! Dinner was a treat and I was starting to feel very tired, so decided to walk back to the hostel and check how my clothes were going.
They were all dry so I packed up the bag and left out what I needed for tomorrow(still had the whole dorm to myself might i add!) Then I decided to head out and sit on the rooftop terrace with one more glass of wine to finish the day off??
