Canada July-August 2006

A Sea Day as we cross Baffin Bay to Bylot Island & Pond Inlet. Much of the day was foggy, there is no ice, no whales, no PBs. Lots of reading though. The presentations were on Arctic adaptations (Tundra Tapestry), Stromatolites (er…rocks. I played hookey). Extreme bits of Antarctica (scary) and Canada-Bashing (Pollution of the High Arctic Seas – wagged it). The newspaper I picked up in Grise Fiord has reference to the Iloffe and to military manoeuvres in Pond Inlet while we are there. I passed it on to the crew, but no apparent interest. No-one else seems to have bought local papers, so my copies have done the rounds. Word from Stan’s Shortwave radio is of terrorist activity having closed Heathrow – 10 flights targeted for explosions of fluids in hand luggage. It all seems very far away.
