Canada July-August 2006

As foreseen, the nine o’clock shower was announced to the six other residents by swanning by in a red kimono. What else to do? We spent the morning following Jean-François’ advice about computer shops. How fascinating is that? And we failed! But we did learn how to navigate the city. By noon, we were ensconced on the verandah behind the overgrown front lot (garden) awaiting our guests. I had braved the Beer Store, full of unsavoury, malodorous, badly dressed and ill-adjusted fellows to fetch a 6-pack, and so we lounged a while until the recently emigrated Andy, Gill, David and Jonathan Ashworth arrived. Yes, they moved to Petawawa two weeks ago, and though we never saw them during their sojourn in Overthorpe, (NW Leicestershire) we have corresponded, so I made an arrangement to meet for lunch. The decision was brave, but will be great for them, as the lifestyle will suit them perfectly: it’s safe, orderly, clean, “outdoor and active” and easy to manage. By sharp contrast to Oz, it has high art too. We went on an amphibious bus tour round the sights and onto the river! And the boys, who were lovely, followed Adrian round the Rideau canal locks. In the evening we watched a carefully patriotic son-et-lumière on the Parliament building before a nightcap.
