Rome 2019

The Pantheon is a temple in Rome completed under emperor Hadrian in the year 126 AD. Its name means all gods and was constructed as a temple to all of the gods in roman culture. Its exterior architecture is unique because it is the only building we saw in the city that had both a rectangular shaped front porch or portico with a circular room housing the main building. Its central dome is made entirely of unreinforced concrete and, at a height and diameter of one hundred forty-two feet, is the largest dome of its composition in the world even being built almost two thousand years ago. Housed inside is the coffin of one of the great Italian artists, Rafael, probably famous for completing the work known as the School of Athens inside the Vatican Museum as well as many other works within its walls. The pantheon is a structure that shows power and pride in religion through the entirety of roman history shown with its conversion into a church as it functions currently. Because of this conversion It remains one of Rome’s best preserved buildings.
