Well we are home, the cottage is tucked in for another season, floors are painted, fridges are empty. This is usually a low key, quiet experience but this year the cold wind roared and the rain poured down.
Family and friends gathered for Thanksgiving. We used to all dine together before our families quickly sprouted with marriages and births, making it a bit difficult with arrival times, bed times etc. Now we meet for Cocktails before dinner, taking turns on location and each bringing our own beverages and an appetizer to share. It is and was very special to gather at this time. We all do not have the opportunity to see each other in one place over the summer, hard to believe, but time, unforeseen circumstances, company and family activities keep everyone busy.
We reminisce over the events of summer, we all feel the void of those we have lost, and we honestly care and worry about those facing health challenges in the coming months. We also laugh our asses off, the noise level is high, children are running around, toys are strewn and nobody wants to leave, it is great! Eventually the aroma of turkeys cooking beckon everyone through the path to their dining tables. It was Saturday, on Sunday some depart and those left have work to do ... closing up.
In spite of the weather challenges all went well. I was worried about crossing the lake but those who had boats to put to bed on "the other side" travelled together. My kids do not mind the bounce! I remember feeling that excitement when I was a lot younger.
I never say goodbye to this place, my thoughts always get lost as I leave the dock, tears stream down my face. The spirit of many take turns and care for this piece of heaven while we are gone. I always turn around and watch until we get to the mouth of the river, then and only then do I face forward and think about what will be, over the next year. It is my New Years Day.
As promised I am going to continue to pop up with a thought or two now and then, and will share experiences along the way. Happy new year to you all, keep healthy and continue to take care of each other.
