Summer Travels

Thursday. Pouring down rain. And of course, I had no rain gear. I anticipated letting the weather clear up in the morning before venturing out into town, until it became apparent that that wasn’t about to happen anytime soon. So I sucked it up, bought myself a hot chocolate, and walked around the shops. A few hours later, I met Joey back at the apartment and we went to get him that haircut. He claimed that the long curliness was getting ridiculous – but I argued that it was sexy. His barber is a slightly crazy guy who loves to talk about whatever it is that he’s watching on TV. Joey had warned me that it would be game shows, but this particular day it was Dr. Phil, counseling a woman who believed that her father had hired a hit man to murder his other daughter over money. Oh, TV drama. Once Joey had paid for his cut, we took the shuttle back to the other side of town and had lunch at Garcia’s – an authentic little Mexican place just down the street from the apartment. At this point, I was freezing. But the food was awesome and made up for having to sit outside. I had chicken tacos, while he had (I think) pork tacos & a steak quesadilla. How the hell does he stay so skinny?!

Ryan and Jay showed up at the apartment not long after us with Sam (Joey’s brother – also lives at the apartment) -- who apparently had inhaled one too many airplane fumes at work that afternoon. Sweet baby Jesus was he hilarious. He plopped himself down on the ground, lit up his weed, and passed it around. Ryan declined, opting for a regular cigarette instead. Joey took one hit before giving it back, coughing that his lungs were too healthy. Jay took a few hits, but not too many. I took Ry’s advice and simply said “No thanks”. Jay offered to walk me to the Salvation Army to get rain gear, and I managed to find black rubber boots for $5 and a jacket for $10. We also went into Tongass to get socks, followed by a photoshoot of my new gear being put to use down by the water.

After getting back to the apartment, Joey left for work, and

Ryan went with him. Since it was still pouring down rain, Jay, Sam and I decided to stay in – making our own drinks and watching movies. I sent them to the store while I took a hot shower, and they came back with tequila, lemonade, and cinnamon rolls. What a dinner! Oh, and Sam got himself a chocolate stout. We curled up on the bed and watched Young Frankenstein until almost all the tequila was gone. At that point, Sam decided he wanted something else, so he and I (in my booty shorts, rain jacket, and boots) walked down the street to the liquor store to see what we could find. After much consideration, we decided on Corona cans. Nice and simple. That is, until the guy at the register wouldn’t let us check out because neither of us had ID. Sam insisted on giving me a piggy-back ride back up the apartment, and we managed to make it about 10 feet before we both face-planted into the ground. Luckily, there was no blood. We marched ourselves back up to the apartment, grabbed our IDs, and headed back out into the pouring rain to get our beer. By the time everything was all said and done, Jay was ready to leave. He took a cab home, and left Sam and I to enjoy our beer and Harry Potter (I couldn’t believe it when he agreed to that!)
