Family Adventure Part 2: Bergen

Bergen, Norway, 01.27.2017

When we got to the Bergen airport, we were greeted by Brigt and Kristin as well as their niece Guro and her husband who had just returned to Norway after spending several years in South Africa and taken to a dinner at Brigt’s sister Inger-Marie’s house. I really enjoyed connecting with the people there I had met before and meeting those I hadn’t. After a somewhat hectic couple of travel days, it was nice to feel like I was at home again.
The next day we did the drive to Øystese again, stopping many of the same places that I had in August. I was impressed by how much I

remembered. The weather was clear for much of the day, but got foggier as we got closer to Øystese. The view was not as stellar as it was on August, but I feel that Brigt, Egil and I did a good job of explaining how good the view they were missing out on was to my family. When we returned to Bergen we had dinner at Egil and Ranveig’s house.
We spent our final day in Bergen wandering around downtown, seeing some sights and buying sweaters. Lisa, Kevin and I all ended up purchasing identical sweaters, but I would like to point out that I selected mine first and have had my eye on it for a couple months. I am the trendsetter of the family.
Kristin prepared a lovely dinner of reindeer with lingonberries for us and a few other closer family members (absolutely delicious) before several other friends and family members came over. Kristin had made a birthday cake for Kevin, and Lisa and I were tasked with decorating it. I made marzipan roses for the first time, and then we tried to write “Happy Birthday Kevin”. The decorating icing was not coming out of the tube easily, so Lisa and I spent a very silly half hour in their attic with the cake that resulted in a somewhat sloppy “Happy B Day Kevin”. We sang “Happy Birthday” in english, and then the rest of the people at the party sang the Norwegian version, which is just way better and more exciting. We ate so so much delicious dessert (birthday cake + cloudberry and cream krumekake type cups + a few other beautiful cakes + an incredible cookie selection…) and then did the traditional dance around the christmas tree together singing. It was a lovely group of people to spend our last evening in Norway with!
