19 - North Iceland roadtrip - day 3

Myvatn, 09.03.2019

Hello!

Our daytrip started off at the Goðafoss waterfall. This waterfall is a bit touristy but still worth a visit! It's easily accesible and photogenic. While we were watching the waterful, a beautiful rainbow appeared! This often happens when the sun is shining and it looks so magical. As the sun was shining very bright, our group-selfies turned out

hilarious (with a lot of closed eyes).

After taking our pictures and walking along the waterfall for a bit, we drove in the direction of the Mývatn lake.
We stopped at Dimmuborgir. At this site there are many walks you can do (varying from 15 minutes to 2 hours). We chose the longest one because we felt in the mood for a longer walk. While walking around, you can see many lava-rock formations and the surroundings were covered with snow. We didn't walk so much yesterday so it was nice that we did this walk! It was a beautiful environment and the sky was clear blue.

Next up we went to Grjótagjá cave. This place is a famous location from the Game Of Thrones series were Jon Snow and Ygritte made love. It looks better on Google maps as it is pretty dark in the cave but it is very cool to see. The water is super clear and it looks kind of

like a bath. The water used to be around 60 degrees, now it is around 40 degrees. People used to bathe in here but that's not allowed anymore. What I loved about this cave is that the water was clear blue, definitely one of my favorite colours!

After the cave we went to a place named "Hverir" to view some boiling mud pools. The smell of the sulphur was really bad. But, that's something you have to get used to in Iceland as all hot water smells like this. It was a cool place to visit as there are not many places where you can see this kind of phenomenon. It's weird to think that the mud is actually boiling due to earth's warmth!

Then we went to another hot thermal pool named 'Myvatn Nature Bath'. It is comparable to the blue lagoon but you pay a lot less and it is smaller (also, there is no mask + drinks included). Still, it is a great place to come and relax. There are also some sauna's and steam

rooms to relax in.

On the way to this location we drove past a little forest so we decided to go back for a walk there. The forest is called Höfð and the walk there was a pleasent one and took about 30 minutes. The walk through the forest took us to the edge of the Myvatn lake.

It was starting to get near to dinner time so we decided to go back to our hostel in Akeruyi. It was definitely more active than the day before and we loved it! At the hostel, we cooked some pasta and played games. It was a fun last night! Tomorrow we are driving back to Reykjavík, while making some stops along the way.

Ciao,

Camille
