We woke up at 5am and were driving by 6:30. We rode six hours down the west coast and it was absolutely beautiful. We were thinking about flying but I'm so glad we didn't. We watched the scenery change from dry barren Guanacaste to the green tropical rainforest of Osa Peninsula. I sat staring out my window, eating my Pringles and listening to Bon Iver for a very long time.
Finally, after what felt like days, we turned up a steep bumpy unpaved path. Our car halted to a stop in front of a sign that said, "Tranquilo Lodge." It was a beautiful hotel up on a mountain overlooking a luscious green forest and the ocean. We swam in the infinity pool and watched the nesting toucans swim around below us.
Then we went to this beach called the "Whales Tale" that was supposed to be famous or something but it just sounded like another beach to me. Until we got there. It was stunning. We walked up the beach and saw red macaws flying above us and hermit crabs wriggling beneath our feet. We even found a homeless family of dogs laying on the side of the brackish river which I personally thought was a bad idea because that area is known for its crocodiles.
When we reached the spot, it was like from out of a movie. The palm trees stretching down the beach, lining the inland. I can't even describe the beach. You'll just have to look at the pictures. There was this sand bar that went out to the rocks and the water on top was like glass. Like I said, I can't describe it so I'm going to stop trying.
