My diary

Dating back to the 16th century much of Cuenca's colonial charm such as the cobblestone streets and churches on every corner are from this era. Cuenca was described to me as beautiful and laid back which I certainly agree with. Like Quito it's in the mountains at a high altitude making the weather cooler than I would prefer but the sights made up for the lack of sunshine and warmth. The street views I captured could be mistaken for Europe, but I would have to say I actually feel Ecuador so far has done a better job of preserving and maintaining their beautiful colonial buildings and churches.

On my flight to Cuenca I assumed from my surroundings I was the only foreigner on the flight. Upon arrival and at the only luggage carousel pick up of the small airport standing with only locals my assumption was true. This is an exciting moment for me as I take a deep breath in a truly feel that in that moment I'm in Ecuador. As a backpacker I try and reach for the path less travelled and when I find myself alone from any other backpackers I know that I've accomplished my goal and I can now get a true experience. Cuenca, Ecuador

My time in Cuenca is short but was

an excellent experience. One of the unique pictures I captured is of a library with a crowd of people outside. Just walking by I could feel a buzz of energy in the air and as a fellow book worm I was happy and excited to see the library so embraced. Unfortunately my Spanish was not strong enough to find out from the locals what was going on. I also enjoyed finding a flower market in front of a church I was passing. I intended to take pictures of the church but the local market pulled my attention. If I would have been staying a few days longer in Cuenca I would have purchase flowers for my room but perhaps another time. Did you know Ecuador grows the best long stem roses in the world? Next time your buying roses at Costco check the label where there from, it's likely Ecuador. They are grown in northern

Ecuador and I hope to make it to a rose farm on this trip. The reason they grow so well here is because Ecuador is at the equator line which makes the sunlight directly above encouraging the roses to grow tall and straight up. Cuenca is beautiful and I'm glad I made the effort to go off the beaten path to visit it. Hasta la proxima Cuenca.
