US Trip 2018

In the first piece of good news for the day, Nadia found good coffee 5 minutes from the hotel! With that taken care of, after breakfast we headed into downtown. We had covered the museums we wanted to see yesterday, so today we just wandered around the city, took photos of some of the many murals and soaked up the sights and sounds of the main street, Broadway. Most of the street is filled with pubs and bars with bands playing day and night. This Monday is the Memorial Day public holiday, which if you believe the ads on TV is all about sales, so the city was busy with many people who have taken an extra day off. Despite the number of people around we really loved the atmosphere and were looking forward to returning in the evening.

We had lunch at a Mexican place just off Broadway. We wanted something fairly small so we both ordered appetizers. We still could have just shared 1!

We had dinner at a restaurant downtown and then headed back to Broadway for the evening. Most of the bars don't have a cover charge so many people move from one to another during the night. After a couple of laps of the street, and not knowing much at all about country music or the bands playing, we settled on a bar called Second Fiddle that was not too crowded, but not dead, and found a stool.

The bands in most of these places play for tips, but there are so many venues that it would be easy for a decent group to get plenty of work. The first band was very good, but the second band were really good! The lead singer was really fun - he came offstage a few times, getting people to sing and even getting the odd selfie with the crowd! It turns out that Nadia really is a li'l bit country, Y'all. She was dancing for most of the evening, but the bands played a good mix of old and new coutnry and stuff that wasn't country.

So after a great night, a few drinks and a bit of a dance, we headed back to the hotel for the night.
