Our next stop was Cannon Beach, Or. We were told the Oregon coast was a must to see so we headed to Cannon Beach. The town is a beautiful little tourist town with lots of restaurants and unique shops.
The highlight is, of course, the beach and the rock outcroppings along it. If you have seen the movie The Goonies, you have seen this rock. It is a giant outcropping caused by earthquakes and the sliding of the volcanic plates for hundreds (perhaps thousands) of years. Truly amazing. It is the home to a lot of birds including the Puffin, of which the only one we saw was a statue, cute just the same. As you can see the winds have blown the trees into mis-shappen angles as there are always strong winds blowing from the ocean.
On the way back from the beach, we stopped at the Camp 18 Restaurant. It is called that because it was the 18th timber camp back in the days of harvesting the lumber from the gigantic trees along the coast. It is built entirely of these giant timbers that are amazing and has all these statues each carved out of one giant tree trunk. As you can see, Paul got a 'little too familiar' with some of the carved animals. Fortunately, they didn't ask us to leave and we had a great lunch.
