After a good night's sleep for me and not so much for Ken, we woke to sunny skies and were ready to search for coffee and croissants. What else do you do in Paris for breakfast? Luckily we found Brasserie St. Regis just a couple of blocks down, with the friendliest waiter in France. He was bonjouring to everyone that walked past the open windows and doors, as well as whistling and humming. As a bonus, the cafe creme and croissants were amazing, so a nice way to start the day.
My only goal while in Paris was to visit the Picasso museum, which I
had visited 15 years ago before it got renovated. After wandering through the Marais, we got in line for the museum right before it opened. The museum is in a beautiful chateau and the featured exhibit was from the WW2 era, that focuses on Guernica, which was obliterated via German bombings. Picasso was devastated by the bombings and created an entire collection dedicated to the town. It was great to see groups of school children learning about the art as well as the world war that affected so many in France.
For as weird as Picasso can be, the museum allowed us to see his evolution as an artist. We left the museum and found a Jewish restaurant recommended by our favorite travel guru, Rick Steves. After a mezza platter we headed back to the room for some down time before the evening.
After a rest, we decided to try a part of Paris that is considered the "hot' area....Canal St Martin. There was a highly recommended wine shop/bistro on the canal, so we figured what the heck, lets go. We walked the 2k, found a cool church in the process and found the wineshop, but it was only 630p and they didn't open for food until
730p. So, we adjusted.....
One of the other places recommended on the Canal is Pink Flamingo Pizza. You can order take-out, they give you a pink balloon, you go sit on the canal and they deliver the pizza by finding the balloon. Perfect! (especially since we bought a bottle of wine, which they promptly uncorked!).
Our pizza was delivered, we enjoyed the views of the canal, the pizza and wine...before walking back to the apartment. Within a couple of blocks of the apartment, the rain returned with a vengeance. It gave us an excuse to duck into a bistro, have one more glass of wine plus an amazing chocolate mousse. A great way to end a relaxed day of Picasso, Pink balloons and Pizza.
