Now, so many people have been asking us one question about our time here, and it’s not how we’re surviving the culture shock, or how the work is going, or how it actually feels to live in Africa. It’s instead ‘how are you guys getting along?’, ‘do you still like each other?’, or if it’s my mum ‘does she still like you?’ (ta for that one Mumma!) It’s not an unfair question; Sacha and I will openly admit that whilst we were good friends at university, we didn’t know each other well enough for it not to be a bit of a gamble committing to spend the next 3-4 months together 24hours a day 7 days a week.
Nevertheless it has been a gamble that has paid off in such a huge way. Three weeks in and we are practically married. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so much in my life. Life here is far more entertaining when you’re experiencing it with someone, and whilst Sacha and I differ on so many levels (she thinks hiking up mountains is fun…) somehow we manage to complement each other perfectly. Maybe a little too perfectly… On more than one occasion we’ve got up, got dressed, turned around and realised we’re wearing exactly the same thing. We’ve also started finishing each other’s thoughts. So there you have it, how embarrassing.
