Leipzig is a beautiful, friendly city. It is in the Eastern part of Germany, so it was once under Communist control, but it looks and feels like so many of the other German cities I have visited. Before going in to see St. Nicholas Church and hear the story of Pastor Christian Fuehrer, we took a stroll through the city and saw some of the sights. Beautiful, historical buildings, the city square ready to show some World Cup soccer, folks visiting over lunch and coffee, the city fountain, and, Rachel's personal favorite, street performers.
One of my favorite spots in Leipzig was St. Thomas Church. St. Thomas, a Lutheran church, is home to the St. Thomas Boys Choir and is one of the most beautiful churches I have ever visited. It was also home to Johann Sebastian Bach who worked as the Kapellmeister or Cantor there. While in St. Thomas, Rachel, Mary, and I had the privilege of hearing a few young men share their amazing voices in that lovely setting. It truly was a little taste of heaven.
After visiting St. Thomas, the three of us strolled across the street to a perfectly European cafe called Kandler...apparently the oldest in Leipzig. The cakes and treats- amazing, the food- delicious, and the coffee and tea- perfect. It was a nice treat to get to know Mary, a friend of my mom's and Carol's from high school, and to hear about her adventures and heart for missions.
