Jing'an area is right in the centre of Shanghai and it feels like a mix of French Concession and Pudong. There is a Kerry Centre as well and we like to eat at Din Tai Fung when we are there. Jing'an area is the place for coffee shops, I would say. Check out some popular websites for recommendations.

Another thing to keep in mind is that in Shanghai, places open and close all the time or they change locations. There is always something new and exciting though.
Jing'an Temple is definitely a tourist attraction here and the Starbucks Reserve has a waiting list sometimes. We stayed at the Middle House once, which is right next to the Reserve and we absolutely loved it. There is a nice mall and a metro station near by too. The hotel is very chic, sophisticated and high-tech, I would highly recommend it.
'Taian Table' is our fine dining favourite, 'Bella Napoli' for Italian vibes, 'Latina' if you feel like samba dancing, Natural History Museum for a family day out.
We recently discovered this newly built area during October Golden Week when the weather was nice and warm to be outdoors. I believe young people prefer to hang out here but we happily take our son with his friends to this place. Check out what West Bund has to offer. http://www.westbund.com/en/
