Christmas in Paradise

Koh Mak, Thailand, 12.24.2017

Today is Christmas Eve December 24. I went for a beautiful avocado and scrambled eggs on toast with a cappuccino. Unsure, but I think that was about as good a breakfast as I can have. Went with my two German friends that I have been hanging out with all week. They both leave in the next 2 days. Melanie tomorrow and Yasmin on the 26th. On my own again I will need to find friends. Crazy this travelling! I have now been travelling for 7 months as of yesterday. Have never travelled this long and I feel so disconnected from my life. It is a crazy feeling to know that I am really only halfway through my trip, but in the back of my mind I think about how I will adjust to life when I get back.
Last time I wrote, I was just starting to hang out with a new group. On December 20, got up to find out we had no power. Was going to be down all day. Mel, Yasmin, and I headed to the village to have an avocado sandwich, but we were too late. Mel managed to get an avocado toast out of them but I had to settle for a very good club sandwich. Breakfast took about 2 hours, but we were not in a hurry. Slowly wandered around the village and then back to the hut. Crazy lazy day! The tide is really high and it is very windy so not great for beachin it. We decided to go to a restaurant bar and have a bit of a party. It turned into a runaway, fun time! Got to the restaurant and had a great meal while the sun was sinking into the ocean. The band started playing and before we knew it we were doing whiskey shots and Melanie was on stage singing with the band. After about 6 shots, a bit of dancing, some pool, we were done. At least Melanie was. We were heading to another bar when she declared she was done and needed to go home. I took her back to make sure she made it. It was only 9:30, but we packed a lot of fun in the 5 hours we were there. Got her back and spent an hour helping her as she vomited many times. Went to bed and was happy that we all had such a good time despite the way it ended.
Got up on the 21st late and had a day of really doing nothing. A few people were moving slower today. Did some tanning, swimming, and Spanish lessons before heading to a cheap little restaurant for some food with Mel and Ollie (Swiss guy). Came back and read the afternoon away and then an early night as we were all tired. Typical beach day!
The 22nd we had another day of windy unsettled weather. Just hung out at the hut, having a tan, swim, and Spanish lessons. Stayed at the restaurant late chatting with different people. Met a really drunk Dane guy who declared they were going to be a hockey superpower soon. Dominick had decided that Mel should be his girlfriend so they had a very animated discussion at which point Dom stomped off

mad. A little too much ego there for me. Put kind of a damper on our evening.
The 23rd was Saturday and Trash Hero day. We volunteered and spent the morning picking up garbage around the island. Was fun and made you feel like you were doing your part. Great idea sponsored by the owners of the island. They gave us all t-shirts and lunch. After lunch we once again hit the surf for tanning, swimming and more Spanish lessons. The girls again used my hut to do laundry. I don’t have any laundry as all I wear is my swimmers and occasionally a t-shirt. Easy life! Stayed up late and had a few whiskeys with Frank (Swiss guy). Frank is the only one staying as long as me so it is good to get to know him. Can’t believe it is Christmas in a few days. Very surreal! We will have a bbq meal on the night of the 24th, but not much else is going on. Will be my last evening with Mel before she heads back to Germany. They just keep coming and going. Who will remain friends for a long time and who just fade in the distance. Only time will tell!

Merry Christmas to everyone of you! Glad you are all in my life. Be good to everyone and treat yourselves occasionally. You all deserve it!
