At around 6:30-7am greeted by a beautiful sunrise, after barely sleeping for the 3rd night in a row, this time not because it was wet and cold, but because Marc was snoring like a tractor, we began the hike from Shira Camp where we slept to Lava Tower (4600m) only to acclimatize, have lunch and walk down on another trail to 3976m to Barranco Camp.
Nothing but astonishing views wherever I would look, however a seemingly never-ending upwards trail lead to the altitude sickness taking its first tolls and the first people starting to throw up.
Also I was having a headache 5x worse than the one the night before and I was getting dizzy. For some reason Claire's Pills weren't working yet and as the walking poles were starting to become blurred in front of my eyes I thought at 4500 that I had no chance of making it. Only because Attilay took my backpack and carried it up for me and because DJ Jacks tunes, which I was syncing my steps and breathing to allowed me to continue. I was able to make it to 4600m where lunch was waiting. The soup we always got as a first course would not go down and obviously I had no appetite due to the altitude. Additionally, I was so tired that it was hard to keep my eyes open. With Killians (Main Leader) words "food is key" in my ears I forced down the first bowl feeling like throwing up after every sip and taking 30 second long naps around every 3 sips. After the first bowl I started to acclimatize slowly or maybe Claires pills started to show effect, anyway somehow I recovered and had 2 more bowls and a bit of chicken and rice. On the way back down, Alberto, who was singing and dancing the whole way and didnt seem to feel the height at all, set the pace and while many people still struggled with the lack of oxygen I was feeling fine and could keep up for once.
We ended up at Barranco Camp, at 3976m, which was in front of Barranco wall, which was a huge wall that should be the first stage of the next day's trek and kept us all humble about our expectations of making it up. Furthermore, we could see the peak clearly for he first time 2100m above our heads, eventhough we were already above the clouds.
