At 9:30am our Bus left the Hotel towards the entry point of our trek, Machame Gate at 1850m, to sign in and to take advantage of the last normal toilet I was going to see for the next 6 days.
Scheduled for this day was a "warm up" walk to 2835m, walking through jungle paths and getting to know most/some of the people I was going to spend the next 6 days with. Honorable mention to Jack who brought his speakers and was going to be the DJ for the trip; even though I thought it was going to go on my nerves and at some point in the coming days I was going to "accidentally" drop his speaker off a cliff if he doesn't switch them off, his music was luckily always on point (honestly, I was impressed!).
The first signs of altitude sickness kicked in already at 2700m in form of a slight headache, which made me realise what I had signed up for...
Wata fo' washiing (pronounced exactly as it is written) and dinner in ice cold weather at the first camp, which ended with Polina accidentally spilling her coffee all over my hiking pants and me realising, that I was way to underdressed for the coming cold days kicked off the most unlucky night of the climb.
I got a short break of bad news after leaving the dinnertent and seeing the breathtaking view of the stars over Kili for the first time.
However soon after, I discovered the "Plumpsklo"/toilet-hole/torpedohole (as we started calling it) with Alex, it was seriously disgusting, not just the odor you could smell from a 20-30m radius or the fact that some people obviously struggled with their aim, but also having to squat for a solid 2-3 minutes after a 10h hike without anything you want to or could hold on to in range, could become very painful. Furthermore, we found out that if you would go alone for a poo and closed the door behind you, you were locked inside in a stinky 2m^2 room because the door could only be opened inwards and had no handle on the inside so someone had to kick it in from the outside as it was also opening very hard (imagine that happening to you at night).
I went to "bed" at 23:00 and shared a tent with Alberto.
