Edinburgh to Kuching
Second night in Kuching and about to go and sort my gear ready to set off for Mating Wildlife reserve tomorrow.
Flights went well although there were delays at every stage; in Edinburgh it was because of thunderstorms at Heathrow, at Heathrow the slots were all crowded and at Kuala Lumpur the plane didn't arrive until ten minutes before it should have taken off.
The departure lounge at KL was full of (mainly) elderly men returning from the Haj in Mecca. Every one of then had a
hacking coughs, so bad that I moved as far away as possible. It was like I imagine a chronic TB ward to sound like.. They filled the plane and their welcoming throngs in Kuching filled the airport - leaving only a narrow passageway to get through. They were all crowding forward so several got their toes run over by my trolley.
I was met at the airport by Brendon who brought me to Basaga Guest House. Very welcoming and nice. Right of the main road but sufficiently far back and with lots of trees so that the traffic noise is absorbed.. Nice room and lovely friendly staff.
I went into the city this morning - the hotel ran a shuttle bus. It was very hot and humid. I visited the old Courthouse comp,ex and then went to the textile museum not far away. That was really interesting - and àir çonditioned -. Lots of the fabrics
and designs are very similar to those I have seen in Nepal and also the Ikat designs of western China. I walked along the main Riverside bazaar and took a little Sampan ride across the river.
By 3pm I was too hot and tired and had seen enough. There were some big black clouds appearing so I headed for the taxi rank and got there just as the rain was starting.
This evening our group gathered and we began to get to know each other. The meal here was lovely. I had Butter Prawns - they were so good and succulent. I am going to try to download a couple of photos now so that will be a challenge.
