The morning was fairly uneventful. The usual routine. Alagu has a tree that she just loves to shimmy up (wrapping her arms and legs around till they almost touch and shuffling up like a koala). Today she was ripping off branches everywhere and making what seemed like an attempt at a nest. Every now and again a branch or leaf would fall down from a great height – she loves being right at the top. But she always comes when called – sliding straight down the truck at swift speed.
In the afternoon, Koko decided she would also take a wee on one of the rangers – although she managed to dodge it before too much damage was none. It chucked it down with rain over lunch, and it was still wet and drizzly – so we only worked for about 45 minutes today. We took the babies straight back to their cages – as they won't climb in the rain (again ironic, cause if it's not hot it's raining). I ended up with Archie (who constantly looks like he has a grin on his face) and Maohun (who is super tiny, bald head, and has been sick with diarrhoea all week). It is so surreal carrying an orangutan baby on each leg – I still can't believe it's happening sometimes.
I left Maohun hanging onto my leg while I put Archie in his cage, then took Maohun to his. When I lifted him up, he latched on around my waist and it was like holding a little baby. After I put him in, one of the guy's asked what was on my shoe. And there on the end of my gumboot was a soft little poo that Maohun had chosen to deposit in the short time he was there. Cheeky monkey.
