Why can't I do online check in with American Airlines?

Your flight is operated by another airline or is a codeshare — Online check-in only works if the first leg of your itinerary is operated by American (or its regional affiliate).

Special booking or travel situation — If you’re traveling with a pet, unaccompanied minor, oxygen container, or have requested special assistance (wheelchair, medical, etc.), online check-in may be disabled.

International travel needing document verification — For many international flights, passport, visa, or other documentation may need manual verification before check-in.

Booking issues / missing / mismatched information — If your ticket isn’t confirmed, payment didn’t process fully, or there’s a mismatch (e.g. name/spelling doesn’t match ID), check-in can be blocked.

Flight changes, delays, cancellations, or itinerary changes — If AA has modified your flight recently, the online check-in system might lock you out until things are resolved.

? What You Can Do to Troubleshoot
If you want to try and salvage online check-in (or at least know what to expect):
Confirm your flight is operated by American (not a partner airline).

Double-check that all passenger info (name, DOB, passport/visa, etc.) exactly matches your IDs.


Ensure payment is fully processed and there are no unpaid fees (baggage, upgrades, etc.).

Try using a different device, browser, or the official AA mobile app — sometimes technical issues block check-in.

If traveling internationally, check that all required documentation is complete and valid.

If nothing works: plan to check in at an airport kiosk or counter.
