The Athenian Life: My Fulbright Experience

This has been quite the weekend. Determined to not let one of my last weekends in Athens go to waste, Carly, Lauren, and I went downtown Friday night for dinner and drinks. For dinner, I went to Kafti Patata, which has baked potatoes I have been carving! Then we went to Thissio View for sangria overlooking the Acropolis.
Saturday morning, Carly and I woke up and headed to Anafiotika, a little village underneath the Acropolis. It is said that the people of Anafi moved here after a natural disaster struck their homes. They tried to recreate their village lifestyles in this hidden gem of Plaka. After walking aimlessly and enjoying coffee at a local cafe, we headed to the Poet Sandal Man in hopes of purchasing a pair of sandals. Unfortunately, he was very crowded (it is Saturday during tourist season) so we decided we would have to come back when he has less busy so we could properly have our shoes sized and fitted to our feet. But yes: we will be going back to get some of our very own sandals! Instead, we headed to The Pasta Shop, a little restaurant for pasta lovers. You can choose your own noodles and sauce to make your own special treat! It was delicious! After golfing down my pasta, we headed to Ermou Street to do a little bit of Saturday shopping!

Athens, Greece

On Sunday, we woke up to the rain knowing that we wouldn't be able to do a day trip to a local island if

it was raining. So instead, we decided to go on a spontaneous road trip! This decision came from Carly and I laying in our beds texting each other instead of talking through our thin walls. We just knew we couldn't waste this weekend since there aren't too many left!
The spontaneous road trip led us to Nemea, Kalamata, and Nafplio. Our road trip began with a wine-tasting at Paviliou Estate (AMAZING!). We even bought a bottle to have at home... a sweet rose wine! It was a very peaceful experience with no other wine-tasters in our section (there was an area for big groups in a different house!). After we finished, we headed to Kalamata, where we enjoyed a true Greek taverna lunch: no menus, just fresh food of the day! Kalamata is also known for their olives so I thought I must have one and I have to say, they are not as terrible as expected. I was able to successful swallow this one olive without making too terrible of a face... bravo Kelsey! After wandering through the town, we headed to Nafplio. Surprisingly, Nafplio was the only place where it happened to be rainy while we were there! We wandered the streets a little and I showed Carly the castle, my favorite fried feta cheese with honey and sesame seeds (oh how I miss it!), and the rest of the little town. Just driving aimlessly on the road was enjoyable enough... I couldn't believe how much I missed just driving! It was so relaxing and an efficient way to get around the country.
