Our Great Canadian Road Trip

Ontario to British Columbia and back, Canada

The Great Canadian Road Trip of Summer 2017 was an adventure of a lifetime…

• We drove OVER 10,854 kilometres.
• We climbed (by SkyTram) to an altitude of 2277 metres.
• The total number of days away was 37.
• We spent 20 days driving.
• The number of driving days going west was 10 days (Markham, ON to Duncan, BC), we drove north for 1 day (Duncan to Port Hardy, BC), and drove east for 9 days to get home (Prince Rupert, BC to Markham, ON)... Not including stop-over and visiting days.
• We drove on 2 interprovincial highways – the Transcanada and the Yellowhead.
• We sailed on four different ferries for a total of 21 hours and 343 nautical miles (552 kilometres).

• We drove through Wawa, ON 4 times.
• We saw 4 waterfalls.
• We camped in two National Parks – Cyprus Lake in Bruce Peninsula National Park and Banff National Park, which were the first campground and the last campground of the trip.
• We drove across five provinces.
• We camped in 3 Provincial Parks – Lake Superior Provincial Park in Ontario, Falcon Lake Provincial Park in Manitoba, and Dinosaur Provincial Park in Alberta.
• We set up and tore down our tent 6 times.
• We cancelled 2 nights of camping (Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park – Ontario and Buffalo Pound Provincial Park – Saskatchewan).
• We stayed in 1 trailer (AirBnB in Delta, BC) and 11 inns/motels.
• We filled up the car with countless litres of gas (this I did not want to track!!)
• The cheapest gas was in Manitoba at .80 cents/litre.
• We were stopped by two police officers (but received 0 tickets).
• Our car battery died twice.
• I made the only car repair by myself.

• We saw big ugly black bugs, swatted hundreds of mosquitoes, removed two ticks, saw four deer, saw lots of prairie dogs, watched two Columbia Ground Squirrels and glimpsed a huge female moose.
• We saw dozens of marine mammals (or evidence thereof) including porpoises, orcas and whale blowhole spouts.
• We visited the largest Canada Goose and the largest Moose.
• We stayed in 3 homes of generous family and friends (Angie, Trish and Jen).
• We made it safely home!

We laughed, we cried, and we made a lifetime of memories…
