Rhakotis (Alexandria)

Well, we have been marching for a long time and along the way have won battles in Asia, and Mesopotamia, and now have pushed deep into Egypt. Along the way we have been successful acquiring more tribes, land, and riches and adding to the Macedonian empire. I have noticed Alexander’s personality a little more and now I see a different side of him. I have never met someone so ambitious that he will stop at nothing to get what he wants, in this case conquering the world. I have seen him be ruthless, but I have also seen him be kind and respectful. I guess that what it takes to conquer the world and run an empire.

After what people heard about what happened in Tyre and how brutal Alexander could be, most towns and city states along our path to Egypt have been quick to capitulate and we have been

met with little to no resistance. Gaza was an exception but that also fell. Unfortunately, Alexander did receive a serious wound to his shoulder but has since recovered.

Once arriving in Egypt, most of the people here have seen Alexander as a “liberator” and they even crowned him as their leader at Memphis. Alexander has lived up to his title in Egypt and has restored many temples, dedicated new monuments to Egyptian gods, and reformed the taxation system based on the Greek models. However, one of Alexander’s greatest accomplishments while we have been here is he founded the

city of Alexandria.

Alexandria is a port city and since being established, its population has been growing rapidly. It sits on the northeast coast of Egypt and is already the largest city on the Mediterranean. I can see it replacing Memphis one day as the capital. Alexander has said he will be building a large library here and will call it the Library of Alexandria which will house an incredible number of books and art about the Hellenistic culture and civilization. Alexander has said he wants Alexandria to be the intellectual and cultural center for the world. I have to say Alexandria is beautiful and is an amazing dedication to our leader.
