Hello, this is me, Mart-Marié Serfontein and this diary will document my year abroad in Spain , where I will be a full time scholar on exchange.
The first time I heard about this program was wayback when in 2013 when Rotary came to our school and did a presentation. In September 2014 I was finally eligible to apply for this gap year program. Thus, I applied, an interview was done at my home in October and I was invited to the Selection Camp in March 2015.
It was a very long time to wait, but finally the time came and I was selected to go on exchange. If the wait from October to March seemed long, I had no idea what the wait from March to January 2016 would be like!
But now we are here, it has been a very long 18 months and now I stand on the brink of my exchange to Spain. After mountains of paperwork and extraordinary dramas to get documents to apply for my visa (no really, it was almost impossible and that's not a hyperbole), I fly tomorrow from Cape Town, my hometown, to Madrid, Spain, where I will live for one year and go to school and learn to live and breathe the Spanish language and culture.
People ask me if I am scared and I can honestly say that no, I am not. I am excited to enter a whole new world, but not scared.
To end off with I would like to thank everyone who has supported me and shared my excitement, from application to being selected and everything that followed. Mom, dad, school friends, the family, fellow outbound exchange students, RYE committee, my sponsor club, Paarl, my host club in Spain, Pozuelo d'Alarcon and so many more.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
So, see you on the other side
