The Dying Gaul is a marble statue that is currently housed in the Museo Capitolini. However, the one that we see in the museum is only a copy of a Hellenistic statue thought to be cast in bronze. It was commissioned to celebrate a victory over the Gaulish people. This statue is significant because the Gauls were one of the only people to have penetrated and sacked the city of Rome. After that the Romans feared the Gauls to the North and after they defeated them in battle this statue was made. It's interesting because the way the defeated adversary is protrayed is in a dignified way, like the Romans respected them as worth adversaries.
