The Altare della Patria was built to celebrate the unification of Italy under Victor Emanuel II in 1925. This building is almost like a Roman temple on top of a pedestal that some Americans decided looked like a wedding cake. This building was built to signify a unified Italy but it did not take long for all of Europe to be enveloped in turmoil. The first and then the second world wars broke out in quick succession. The Italian government has been extraordinarily unstable since then. Even today there are Italians who wish that Northern Italy would succeed from the south.
