One of the cool things about living abroad is that you have a good chunk of time to do things off the beaten-touristy-path. That's exactly what we did, get off of the beaten-touristy-path, when we took a 3-hour hike from Magome to Tsumago!

would have had to switch buses or trains.
What's really cool about this hike is that there is a stone path that intermittently can be found throughout the hike. Unfortunately, not all of it is preserved, and that is why you don't see it along the path throughout its entirety. The stone path is special because it's part of the Nakasendo, which is the original path that went from Kyoto to Tokyo. The path dates back to the Edo period!
Overall, we really enjoyed this hike. It was a great way for us to get out of the city. It
was also a beautiful hike and the trees were still in the midst of changing colors. We were also able to see some beautiful traditional homes, gorgeous waterfalls, and some scary signs to beware of bears!
