Another name for the basilica is the "Papal Arch-basilica of the St. John Lateran" and its longer name is the "Cathedral of the Most Holy Savior and of Saints John the Baptist and the Evangelist in the Lateran". It is right next to the Pontifical Sanctuary of the Holy Stairs. It was made by Borromini around the time of 311-312 A.D. by Pope Miltiades. It was first owned by the Laterani household but was then taken from them because one of the family members was accused of trying to commit mutiny against the state. This was the first Roman basilica for the Vatican City and is the oldest church in Europe. The arch-basilica is more famous and important than St Peter's Basilica. The reason for that is because that is where most of the Vatican City events and meetings happen. One of them is that it is where the Councils are hosted. This also where the Pope is initiated into his role of bishop of Rome. The Pope is the only one who can perform Mass there. Even though it is more important and more used than St. Peter's Basilica, the building is a part of the Vatican City legally.
