9 - Sophie's visit ~ Roadtrip

Hrunalaug, Efstidalur, Kerid Crater, 20.01.2019

Dear readers,

In this blog I will write about the road trip we made while my dear friend Sophie visited me.

We started the day pretty early, we picked up our rental car at 8 am, and then we left straight away. Our first stop was Hrunalaug. This is a hot spring. It was absolutely wonderful. So peaceful just sitting there in the warm water, surrounded by a snowy landscape. We were glad we got there pretty early, as this place is known by others as well, so

when we left quite some tourists where arriving. This hot pool is very accessible by car and the walk to the pool is only a few minutes. I would definitely recommend this place, it's different than any experience I've ever had before.

After staying in the pool for about 1,5 hours, chatting to the other visitors, we decided to go to the next destination. A couple from Boston, USA gave us their bottle of liquor as they hadn't found a time to drink it and they were leaving that day so couldn't take it with them. It was very nice of them, I have noticed that travelers are so friendly, which makes traveling around such a nice experience.

When we got back into our car, the car didn't start. After trying a few times, we asked some others for help but they also didn't manage to start the car and they also didn't have any jump start cables. We tried to make the car start by pushing it, but we didn't manage to push it

fast enough as the snow was pretty deep. We thanked the people who had stayed to help us and let them enjoy the hot pool. We called the car company and they said that they would bring us a new car, which would take approximately 1,5 hours. We felt a bit sad because it was also starting to get very cold inside the car. Some of us had taken their shoes of to sit on them to warm them up. After about 40 minutes another car arrived at the sight, with some friendly Icelandic people who went back to their home to get some startingcables! Like I have wrote before, the people here are so incredibly friendly. We managed to start the car and drove on to an icecream place called "Efstidalur". It was great. The milk for the ice cream came from the cows which you could see from the café. This was also a very nice experience. It makes you realise we should be more thankful for these animals for helping us produce these delicious goods.

After a while, our new car arrived from the car rental company, which meant we could move on to the next spot. We wanted to go to a waterfall named "Bruarfoss", but we found out the road which took you near the waterfall had been closed by the owner of the land. He must have gotten crazy from all the people trying to get to the waterfall. Without this road it would be a 2 hour hike to the waterfall,

and we didn't have time for that as it starts to get dark pretty early. So, we decided to go to the next stop on our plan: the Kerid Crater.

It was about a 30/40 minute drive to the crater. We had to pay 400 isk (which is about €3) to get to the crater. I had seen this crater a lot on images, but they were mostly taken in the summer so when I saw the crater it was totally different than I expexted. That's also what I love about coming around this time of year, everything is going to look so completely different in a few months. Another reason to come back ;). So, the crater was covered in snow and the water in the middle of it was frozen. You can walk around the edge of the ridge and also go down some stairs to go to the centre of the crater. It was nice to see! But now I am very curious what it looks like in summer.

It was starting to get dark so we headed back to Reykjavík. On the way back we stopped at another ice cream place and when we got

home we watched a chickflick together at Victoria's house. It was a great day and I am very grateful for having such lovely friends around me.
Love,
Camille
