14 - Road trip Snaefellsness (day2)

Snaefellsness, 03.02.2019

After breakfast we wanted to try and see the sunrise in the Snaefellsjökull National Park. We parked our car near the Longdrangar View point. We started walking besides the sea to the incredible rock formation named ‘Longdragar’. It was a really nice walk and the sun had just come up, making the sky light up with different colours. The sunrises and sunsets in Iceland are just so stunning, and in the winter you don’t even have to wake up early for

them ;). We really enjoyed walking here and climbing on the rocks. After spending some time here we decided to continue our road trip. It was about a 40 minutes’ walk back to the car.

We wanted to visit another waterfall named ‘Klukkufoss’. On the way there we made a stop at the Djúpalónssandur beach. In the distance we saw some great icicles hanging from the cliffs at the beach. As Melissa was our adventure guide, we took this opportunity to walk down to the beach, towards the huge icicles. The walk was fully on slippery seaweed-rocks. The others weren’t very happy with this idea, as we still had around 1,5 km to go to the end of the beach so we didn’t finish this crazy adventure walk. When we got back to the car we started our drive to ‘Klukkufoss’. The great thing about Snaefellsness is that all the sights are so near to eachother, so most of the time you only have to drive around 20 minutes to the next stop.

Klukkufoss was also really nice, although it was quite high up the mountain. Of course we tried to walk up to it but our feet soon got soaking wet because you couldn’t really see where the water was, as the snow was so thick. It wasn’t really possible to go any further, so we decided we’d have to try again in the summer. Still, it was great seeing this frozen waterfall from a distance.

Next up was a great arch formation at the sea named ‘Arnarstapi’. I would definitely recommend coming here during a visit to

Snaefellsness. It is very easily approachable and this place gives you an amazing view of the sea and of course the arch itself is a wonderful sight.

I had marked a lot of things to do on my Google maps app. I would recommend using the ‘save place’ button on Google Maps. I use this a lot when researching where to go. At home, I look up things to do in a certain area and I put them all in my Google Maps app so when we’re travelling, you can just drive past all these marks. The next place which I had marked was the ‘Rauðfeldsgjá gorge’. From a distance this place doesn’t look that impressive, but you have to walk up to it! Rauðfeldsgjá is a giant crack in the facade of the mountain coming from Snæfellsjökull glacier. It is a little steep walk to get up to this place, but when you get there it’s totally worth it. In the summer, it is possible to walk up to and climb inside it. Standing inside of the

gorge is quite magical. Water falls from the top of the cliff and because it was freezing, huge icicles were hanging of the rocks, creating an impressive sight.

After the gorge we drove to Búðakirkja. This tiny church has been photographed a lot as it is very different from most churches. It’s very small and black. The contrast between the black church and the white snow around it was gorgeous to see. You can stop here for a little break from the road. There isn’t much around this place, so after visiting the church we drove of to our next stop: a hot pot named ‘Landbrotalaug’. It requires a little bit of a search when you have arrived at the parking space. The spring is small, only fits two to three people tops which makes it even more special. When we got there around 5 pm, it was very very cold outside (probably like -8 degrees). Because of this cold, it was even harder to get our bathing suits on, but as we got here we felt we had to. Barbara and I were the only braves ones and the others waited in the car for us. The water had an ‘okay’ temperature. Not extremely hot but I guess if you come here in the middle of the day during summer, it will be a very nice temperature. After spending about 20 minutes in here we went back to the car. Getting dressed was a bit of a challenge as it was so freezing outside but we managed!
This was the last stop of our road trip. We had done a lot this weekend! I had a great time and I really look forward coming back to this place in a few months when the scenery is totally different than

in the winter times.

Love,

Camille
