Travel Log Experience the Medieval World

Even though I had just arrived, the Black Plague had already killed far too many people and had spread over extensive areas of England. People are frightened because life seems to be too short to experience it, rather than solely out of fear of being sick or dying (Aberth 2005, 219). Instead, the Black Plague caused family and church to give up their homes and religion and fled away (Zentner 2015, 3). In late medieval Europe, disposing of the dead instead of engaging in activities became a typical occurrence (Aberth 2005, 219). The majority of people would not participate in sacramental ceremonies, make confessions of sin in the church, receive a viaticum, or be able to pray for the dead. Every aspect of the English civilization was impacted by Black Death, the medieval, fatal disease (Zentner 2015, 4). Despite the Church already beginning to lose its dominance over the Christian world, it was even worse because people's faith never is the same after the pandemic (Zentner 2015, 3). The Black Plague had a significant negative impact on the Catholic Church as an important Medieval institution, and one of the main consequences was the clergy's diminishing status and the general lack of faith from the majority (Aberth 2005, 220). Being someone who connects the public with the Church, priests had a crucial role in the English feudal world (Zentner 2015, 3). People turned to ask for the church's advice when they were in need. Nonetheless, the Church and its church leaders were not live up to their roles as European Christians expected during the difficult time of the pandemic (Aberth 2005, 219). The general population dropped, including church employees, as Black Death was in the area (Aberth 2005, 218). The priests are rumored to have either died from illness or abandoned their church. Most of the cities were deserted, and nobody cared about them (Aberth 2005, 219). Therefore, the entire holiness of the Church was questioned throughout the pandemic. There were no priests around who could provide church services as well as perform ceremonies for the deceased (Aberth 2005, 219). As a result, throughout the plagues, there was no longer any bond between God and his people (Zentner 2015, 4). Public celebrations and communal and religious holidays had to be cancelled (Zentner 2015, 3).
