Day 26 - Hard-hearted People

Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, 07.26.2017

The indigenous people (Indians) of Northern Idaho were tough traders with the French, who in turn called them hard hearted people or those with a “heart of an awl”, which is a very tough tool meant to punch holes in leather. Anyways, modern day Coeur d’Alene, Idaho is somewhat of a gem in the Gem State (Idaho). CDA is a resort town with a huge lake connecting to three rivers (somewhat bluer than the Allegheny, Ohio and Mon), with a nice little town and, of course, mountains all around. The people are Pittsburgh/Midwestern nice with a Northwestern love of the outdoors. Even 60 and 70-somethings hike, bike, ski, jog … whatever. It’s said that if you

don’t like the outdoors, you won’t like Coeur d’Alene.

Started the day out by driving over to neighboring Spokane, WA for breakfast at Frank’s Diner, rated #1 there. Fried tomatoes and eggs for Pat, Joe’s special for Tim….very nice.

Stopped at Gonzaga University’s chapel, a real architectural treat in Spokane. Figured that this building was the source of prayers for the basketball team doing so well in the NCAAs. As for the city of Spokane itself, not sure why, but it looks tired and unattractive. We were glad to leave.

Back to Coeur d’Alene….the center of town is highlighted by a resort / marina on the water, backed up by about eight blocks of shops and restaurants. Very nice, not upscale, but places you don’t mind checking out. NO chains downtown like the Gap, J. Crew, TGI Fridays, etc. All local, which is kinda nice. Even Starbucks has been kept out the main shopping and marina district.

Took a ride part way around the lake … nice areas and views. Got back for Rum and cokes and sundown.
