#NotSurfing!FallingWithStyle

Manly, 30.11.2017

A lovely clear day with a steady flow of white waves- it was time to cash in on my surf lesson. As it was during school time there wasn’t the opportunity to be put in the children’s group but it also meant that there would be no children to show me up and or laugh at me. I zipped my wetsuit up and shrugged the embarrassing yellow t-shirt on.

The lesson began with our instructor teaching us about the rips- a subject I have become an expert in! He took us through the basics of how to balance on the board. Looks easy enough! The first three times of sliding into my board (ON THE SAND!) I managed to get my feet in the wrong place. Eventually I got the idea and managed to push myself up into a half press up.

We then practised how to stand/crouch on the board. Again, I was terrible at it and was grateful he didn’t look my way too often to point out my countless errors. In the sea the waves were fairly small so I stayed calm wading through to some of the bigger ones at the back.

To avoid death, I stayed close to the teachers the entire time! They also made it way easier by pushing the surf board into the wave! I only toppled off a couple of times and luckily when I was near the shallow end so I didn’t get engulfed by any huge waves.

After numerous attempts I finally got my feet in the right place and slowly straightened my knees! I was surfing! Kind of...I fell off immediately after standing up so I’m not sure it counts but I’m going to say it does! I wouldn’t say I took to surfing like a duck to water- more like Bambi to figure skating but I still had one more lesson to become Australia’s number one surfing champion!

Only got this one lousy picture of me...!
