Came home to an email from my Director telling all Expats to report to the Las Palmas office Monday, not to fly to Nouakchott.
All Expats still in Nouakchott were brought back to Las Palmas this weekend.
The Las Palmas Expats work permits expired on June 15 and the Mauritanian government had the paperwork but did not renew them. Currently, I only had the 30 day work permit and would have applied for another one when I landed in Nouakchott Monday.
For now, it is a waiting game of politics. The Mauritanian government could just be posturing to only supply shorter term work permits to make more revenue.
If an Expats work permit expires while they are in Mauritania and there is an government inspection of the office, there are large fines and the Expat has to leave the country as soon as possible.
This sort of reminds me of what ICE is doing back in the states.
